At the northern edge of the Dallas and Fort Worth region, Denton is a college town, home to the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University. The courthouse Square is the center of things, ringed with shops, bars and live music, and the town has long called itself a music city, with small venues like Dan's Silverleaf and Rubber Gloves keeping that going.
It feels lively without feeling huge. The Square and the Fry Street area are the nightlife spots, the Community Market runs on weekends, and the Arts and Jazz Festival and the Redbud festival mark spring. Lake Ray Roberts and Lewisville Lake are a short drive for the water. Robson Ranch is the 55-plus community, and Dallas and Fort Worth are each about 40 miles away. Housing is fairly affordable for the metro, though it has grown quickly, and the population has risen a lot since 2020. Crime is moderate, mostly theft. Spring storms can bring hail and tornadoes, and summers run over 100F.

About this data
Population 169,431 (Census Vintage 2025, July 1, 2025), land area 96.35 sq mi, median value and rent from Census QuickFacts (fetched). Metro 8,477,157 is the assigned Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington MSA figure; Denton is a secondary city, not the anchor. visitor_website and event_calendar URLs were seen in search results (Discover Denton) but not load-tested. Elevation, coordinates, founding, event names and months, hotel ranges, tipping, cost-of-living, crime, home prices and airport distances are approximate or general knowledge; lower confidence because searches returned mostly links, not details.
