Surrounded by warehouses and distribution centers on the valley floor, Kent is a working suburb of about 135,000 people, about 20 miles south of Seattle in the Green River Valley. Boeing has a space operation here, so this is more a place where things get made and shipped than a tourist stop.
Still, there is plenty to do for the price of a short drive. Downtown Kent and Kent Station have dining and shopping, the ShoWare Center hosts hockey and concerts, and the Green River Trail is good for biking and walking. Housing is expensive, though less than Seattle, and homes sell quickly. Washington has no state income tax, but sales tax is high. Crime is moderate for the area, mostly car break-ins and theft, with more caution needed along Highway 99 and some older apartment areas on the West Hill. The valley carries earthquake and flood risk, and late-summer wildfire smoke can settle in.
