Base yourself in Langley City to visit Fort Langley's historic site, farms and wineries, and Campbell Valley park. It is the small, compact core of the Langley area, about 45 km east of Vancouver. It covers only about 10 square kilometres, with roughly 29,000 people packed around the Fraser Highway and Douglas Crescent. Do not confuse it with the much larger Township of Langley around it.
Living here means suburban Metro Vancouver. It is less flashy than the city, with shopping centres, river trails along the Nicomekl, a modest downtown, and large Punjabi, Korean and Chinese communities. Housing is expensive for Canada, with detached homes costing well over a million dollars, though usually less than in Vancouver itself. Winters are rainy rather than cold. Crime runs above the national average, mostly car break-ins and property theft, so do not leave anything visible in your car.

Fair · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 115; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
City of Langley policing is by the RCMP; Crime Severity Index is higher than the BC average and above the national average (roughly 100-130, approximate), mostly property crime, vehicle theft and street disorder; visitor risk is mainly theft from vehicles. Health care: BC MSP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Langley Memorial Hospital (Fraser Health) with an emergency department; Surrey Memorial Hospital as a larger centre. Hazards: winter rain and occasional snow or ice, summer wildfire smoke, Nicomekl and Fraser flooding risk, and earthquake risk in the region. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas to avoid for visitors; use ordinary urban caution late at night along the Fraser Highway and Langley Bypass, and around some downtown lanes and motels where street disorder, drug use and homelessness are reported; car break-ins are common in parking lots
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
