Once known as the Berry Capital of Oregon, Gresham is now the state's fourth largest city, with about 111,000 people, sitting just east of Portland at the doorstep of Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge. It has a suburban, practical feel, with a small historic downtown, hillside neighborhoods and newer developments like Pleasant Valley. The biggest draw is access. The Springwater Corridor Trail runs through town, Powell Butte Nature Park has open meadows and views, and the Gorge waterfalls are about 20 miles away, with Mount Hood a little farther for hiking and skiing. The Saturday farmers market runs from May to October, and summer brings concerts in the park. Portland is about 13 miles west.
Costs are fairly high, though less than closer-in Portland, and the market has flattened. Rockwood and some stretches along East Burnside see more property crime, and car break-ins and catalytic converter theft are common, so keep valuables out of sight. Winters are gray and wet with the occasional ice storm, late summer can bring wildfire smoke and heat waves, and earthquake risk from the Cascadia fault is worth knowing.
