Drivers here can see Detroit's skyline across the river, and Windsor is a border city in the true sense, with many locals crossing for hockey, concerts or a museum. About 230,000 people live here, and the city grew up around the auto industry, which still matters. The riverfront trail is the best thing about the place, a long, easy walk or ride with Detroit's towers as the backdrop. Downtown has the casino, Walkerville has old brick and good restaurants, and Erie Street is the Little Italy for pasta and espresso.
Point Pelee National Park and Essex County's wineries are about an hour away. This is one of the more affordable cities in Ontario, with rents and homes well below Toronto. Crime is above the national average, mostly car theft and break-ins, and a few downtown blocks feel rough at night. Winters bring lake-effect snow, summers are hot and humid, and border lines can be long. Bring your passport.

6.5
Good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 90; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Windsor's Crime Severity Index is above the national average (roughly 80-100, approximate, Statistics Canada and Windsor Police data); main visitor risks are vehicle theft, break-ins from parked cars and some late-night street incidents downtown. Health care: provincial health insurance does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Windsor Regional Hospital (Ouellette and Met campuses), Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare. Hazards: cold winters with lake-effect snow and ice storms, hot humid summers with severe thunderstorms and tornado risk, Detroit River flooding rare. Border note: valid passport required when crossing to the US. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use extra caution late at night in parts of the Downtown core around Pelissier and Wyandotte streets and near some shelters and transit points, and in parts of Ford City and Windsor's east end and west end with higher property and street crime rates; most visitor areas and the Riverfront are generally fine. Border crossings can have long waits at Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel during peak hours
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
