As Michigan's capital, Lansing has a solid government-town feel, with the Capitol dome anchoring downtown. About 114,000 people live here, and the city sits right beside East Lansing and Michigan State University, so game days and campus life spill over. It is also where Oldsmobile and REO cars were born, and the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum tells that story.
Things to do are relaxed and often free or cheap: Capitol tours, the Michigan History Museum, Potter Park Zoo, the Impression 5 Science Center and long walks on the Lansing River Trail. Old Town is the arts corner, and REO Town is slowly filling with new places. Summer festivals earn Lansing its Festival Capital nickname. This is one of the most affordable cities on the list, with low home prices and modest rents. The tradeoffs are crime, which is well above the national rate in parts of the south and east sides (be careful on foot at night), and winters that are cold, snowy and icy. Spring can bring river flooding and severe storms.

2.7
Poor · Data-based
About 1,000 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Violent crime rate roughly 900 to 1,100 per 100,000 residents in recent years (approximate; not verified against a fresh FBI table), well above the national rate of about 360 per 100,000. Common visitor risks: vehicle break-ins and theft, property crime, some assaults and robberies in higher-crime areas at night, football-weekend crowd issues in East Lansing. Hospitals: Sparrow Hospital (University of Michigan Health-Sparrow, Level I trauma center) and McLaren Greater Lansing. Hazards: winter storms, lake-effect-influenced snow, ice and extreme cold (December to March), spring flooding along the Grand and Red Cedar Rivers, severe thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes (spring and summer), summer heat and humidity.
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Violent and property crime are concentrated in parts of Lansing's south side and the Southwest and Northeast neighborhoods, including areas near South Cedar Street, Pennsylvania Avenue and parts of Saginaw Street east of downtown; use ordinary urban caution at night, especially on foot. Downtown, Old Town, REO Town daytime, and East Lansing campus areas are the typical visitor zones and are generally fine.
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
