About 20 miles north of Indianapolis, Carmel is an affluent suburb of about 106,000 people, best known for its roundabouts, more than 150 of them. Drive it once and you get the point. It is also a genuine arts town, with the Center for the Performing Arts, the Arts and Design District, and Old Town shops and restaurants.
Life here is polished and family-oriented. The Monon Trail runs through the middle for walking and biking, Central Park and Ellis Park handle outdoor time, and the Saturday farmers market runs from spring to fall. The Christkindlmarkt in late November and December is the signature event, with an international arts festival in September and a marathon in April. It is high-priced for the Midwest and consistently ranked among Indiana's safest cities, with car break-ins and shoplifting the main concerns. Winters bring snow and ice, and spring storms can turn severe.
