Rolling bluegrass farms with black plank fences surround Lexington, and that is why it is horse country. About 330,000 people live here, making it a mid-sized city close to Thoroughbred farms and famous bourbon distilleries. It has a college-town energy from the University of Kentucky, and it feels calm and green compared with most cities of its size.
Visitors tour horse farms, spend a day at the Kentucky Horse Park, and watch races at Keeneland in April and October, which is a beautiful setting for a day out. The Distillery District and the Bourbon Trail are the draw for whiskey fans, and Old Frankfort Pike is a lovely drive. Living costs are near the national average and home prices have risen modestly. Violent crime is low for a city its size, though car break-ins are the usual risk, and spring storms and summer humidity come with the territory.
