Indiana's second-largest city sits about 120 miles from Indianapolis and has the easygoing feel of a place that got past its factory years and kept the good parts. About 275,000 people live here, with a metro closer to 420,000. Three rivers meet downtown, Promenade Park now runs along them, and The Landing and Electric Works give the center some life after dark.
Visitors come for the Children's Zoo, the botanical conservatory, the art museum and TinCaps games at Parkview Field. Summer festivals fill the calendar, Three Rivers in July especially. Living here is affordable, with housing well below the national norm and a market that keeps rising steadily. Violent crime is close to the national average, though car break-ins happen and a few south and east side blocks deserve more care. Winters bring real ice and snow, and spring can mean tornado warnings.
