Indianapolis is roughly an hour away from Muncie, a college and factory town in east central Indiana, home to Ball State University and to the Ball family, whose glass jars made the name famous. Sociologists once used it as a model of average America, hence the nickname Middletown. About 65,000 people live here.
There is more to do than you might expect. Minnetrista has gardens and a museum, the Owsley art museum is on campus, and the Cardinal Greenway is a long rail trail. Downtown has a few good places to eat. Muncie is one of the cheapest places to live in Indiana, with very low home prices, though some of the housing is old or vacant. Poverty is high and crime is above the national average, mostly property crime. Spring storms and snowy winters are typical, and the White River sometimes floods.
