Band instruments gave Elkhart a long manufacturing history, and today this northern Indiana city of about 54,000 people calls itself the RV Capital of the World. It sits on the edge of Amish country, close to Goshen and about 17 miles from South Bend. It is a working manufacturing town first, and the local economy follows the RV industry through its ups and downs. Housing is affordable, cheaper than the South Bend suburbs.
Visitors can see the RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum, tour Ruthmere, walk Island Park and the riverfront, or take in the railroad museum. The Quilt Gardens Tour runs in summer, and Shipshewana and its flea market are a short drive away. Crime is above the national average, mostly property crime, so lock your car. Lake Michigan brings heavy winter snow, and spring and summer can bring severe thunderstorms and tornado risk along with river flooding.
