Small by city standards, Corner Brook is the west coast hub of Newfoundland, about 20,000 people climbing the hills above the Humber Arm, with snowy and windy winters. It grew up around a pulp and paper mill, and that working-town character still shows in the old mill housing of the Townsite and the steep streets.
It is a good base for the outdoors. Marble Mountain is about ten minutes away for skiing, and it turns into a mountain-biking and hiking spot in summer. Boat tours go out on the Bay of Islands, the Humber River draws fly fishers, and Gros Morne National Park is roughly an hour's drive north. Housing is cheap next to most of Canada, though groceries cost more on the island. The roads are hilly, and moose on the Trans-Canada at night are a real hazard.

Safety overview
Corner Brook is served by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and RCMP; the Crime Severity Index is near the provincial average (approximate, Statistics Canada; not verified); main visitor risks are theft from vehicles and occasional assaults late at night. Health care: Newfoundland and Labrador MCP does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Western Memorial Regional Hospital (Corner Brook, main west coast referral hospital), Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville. Hazards: heavy winter snow, ice and wind, post-tropical storms and hurricane remnants (for example Fiona in 2022), coastal flooding and storm surge, fog, moose collisions, and wildfire smoke in dry summers. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas are widely avoided by visitors. Use ordinary caution late at night near some downtown bars and in parts of West Valley Road and the downtown core where property crime and drug-related incidents are reported. Winter driving is hazardous, with steep hills and sudden snow squalls, and moose collisions are a serious hazard on the Trans-Canada Highway at night
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
