Right beside Moncton and much smaller, Dieppe has about 28,000 people, while the Greater Moncton area is closer to 158,000. It is an Acadian city, majority francophone, with services in French and English under New Brunswick's bilingual system. It took its name from the 1942 raid and became a city in 2003.
Day to day, the Dieppe Market on weekends is the social centre. Visitors reach Magnetic Hill and the Petitcodiac tidal bore in Moncton, Hopewell Rocks about 40 km away and Parlee Beach in Shediac. Housing is below the national average, but rents have climbed quickly since 2021. Winters bring ice and nor'easters, and late summer can bring post-tropical storms. Stay off the soft mudflats of the river. National Acadian Day on August 15 brings a tintamarre, a noisy parade.

7.0
Very good · Data-based
Crime Severity Index around 80; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Crime is somewhat lower than Moncton (RCMP Codiac Regional Policing; Moncton CMA CSI near or below the national average, roughly 70-90, approximate); main risks are vehicle theft and break-ins and property crime. Emergency 911. Health care: provincial coverage does not cover visitors from other countries, so travel health insurance is advisable; Canadian visitors should carry their provincial health card. Hospitals: The Moncton Hospital and Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre (Moncton, about 5-10 km). Hazards: cold snowy winters (-10 to -20 C), nor'easters and freezing rain, spring flooding of the Petitcodiac and Memramcook rivers, post-tropical storms in late summer to autumn
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
No areas widely flagged for visitors; use ordinary caution late at night around parts of downtown Moncton and near some bars and commercial parking lots; winter roads can be icy and the tidal Petitcodiac River banks have soft mud, so stay off the mudflats
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
