Overview

Wander the steep streets of St. John's, a working harbour city on a rugged Atlantic coast, and you will pass downtown rowhouses painted in bright colours, known as Jelly Bean Row. It is the easternmost major city in North America and one of the oldest European settlements on the continent. About 110,000 people live in the city and over 210,000 in the metro area.

Visitors climb Signal Hill, hike the East Coast Trail, drive out to Cape Spear, and spend evenings on George Street, where a screech-in ceremony is a rite of passage. Whale and puffin tours run in summer, and icebergs drift by in late spring. Housing is cheap compared with most Canadian cities, though the market has tightened lately and groceries cost more. Crime is low. The weather is the catch. Fog, wind, blizzards and freezing rain are common, and moose on highways are a real hazard.

                  Very good · Data-based

Crime Severity Index around 65; the Canadian figure is about 80.

                  Safety overview

Crime rate is below the national average for a city of its size (Crime Severity Index in the lower half of Canadian CMAs, approximate); main visitor risks are petty theft from vehicles and bar-district disturbances. Health care: provincial (MCP) insurance does not cover visitors, so travel insurance is advisable; hospitals include Health Sciences Centre (trauma), St. Clare's Mercy Hospital and Janeway Children's. Hazards: fast-changing weather and heavy fog, winter storms and blizzards, freezing rain, coastal cliffs and rogue waves, moose on highways at dusk, hurricane remnants in late summer or fall. Emergency: 911

                  Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

Nothing of particular note for visitors; St. John's is generally safe. Use ordinary city caution late at night on parts of Water Street and George Street after bar closing, and in some older parts of the east end and Rabbittown after dark. Avoid cliff edges and coastal trails in fog or high wind, and do not approach the water's edge in swells
