San Luis Obispo, known as SLO, is a California Central Coast college town of about 51,000 people, with Cal Poly shaping its youthful feel. It is close to the ocean, ringed by hills, and it once won a happiest city title. Downtown is small and pleasant, and the Thursday night farmers market is the weekly event.
You can visit the mission, take a look at Bubblegum Alley and the Madonna Inn, and hike Bishop Peak or Cerro San Luis. Pismo Beach, Avila Beach and Morro Bay are all a short drive, Hearst Castle is about 45 miles up the coast, and Edna Valley and Paso Robles are close for wine tasting. The big downside is cost, since housing is very expensive and among the priciest in the state. Petty theft and bike theft are the main crime issues, weekend nights get rowdy near lower Higuera Street, and wildfire and earthquakes are real risks to plan for.
