In early October the Balloon Fiesta fills the sky above Albuquerque with hundreds of hot air balloons, which is worth planning a whole trip around. The city sits high in the desert at about 5,300 feet, with the Sandia Mountains rising right behind it. The Sandia Peak Tramway takes you up for big views, Old Town shows off the Spanish colonial roots, and Central Avenue still carries traces of Route 66 neon.
About 555,000 people live in the city. Costs are a bit below the national average, and it is one of the more affordable places in the Southwest to live. Food is a highlight, especially anything with green chile. The tradeoffs are a high rate of violent and property crime, particularly along parts of Central Avenue east of Downtown, plus car break-ins. The altitude and strong sun catch newcomers off guard, so drink plenty of water. Santa Fe is an easy day trip.
