The Chicago Cubs come to Mesa every February and March for spring training at Sloan Park, and that is what the city is known for most. It is the big suburb-sized city east of Phoenix. That baseball season is the best time to visit, along with the mild winter weather that draws so many snowbirds. Otherwise the draw is the desert itself, with Usery Mountain, Saguaro Lake and the Salt River for tubing and kayaking, and the Superstition Mountains close by.
About 515,000 people live here, in a metro area of more than five million, so it feels like part of one large valley. Downtown Mesa has an arts center and a Saturday farmers market, but the rest is mostly family suburbs like Eastmark and Dobson Ranch. Costs are above the national average, and home prices have flattened after a big run. Violent crime is fairly low. The main hazard is heat, well over 105 degrees through the summer.
