Prairies stretch in every direction around Brandon, Manitoba's second city, a hub of about 51,000 people on the Assiniboine River, roughly 210 km west of Winnipeg. The Wheat City nickname fits. It serves a huge farming region, and the calendar is built around events like the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair and the summer fair.
Things to do are modest but real: the Riverbank Discovery Centre and river trails, the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum, the art gallery, and WHL hockey with the Wheat Kings. For a proper outing, Spruce Woods Provincial Park and its sand dunes are about an hour east, and Riding Mountain National Park is under two hours north. Housing is among the cheapest you will find in a Canadian city this size. The honest downsides are winter, with deep cold and blizzards, and safety. Crime is well above the national average, mostly property crime, with more trouble downtown and in the north and east ends.

Crime Severity Index around 125; the Canadian figure is about 80.
Safety overview
Brandon's Crime Severity Index is well above the national average (roughly 110-140 for the Brandon CA, approximate, Statistics Canada), driven by property crime, theft, disorder and some violent crime; Prairie cities of this size typically rank above the Canadian average. Health care: Manitoba Health does not cover visitors, so travel health insurance is advisable. Hospitals: Brandon Regional Health Centre (regional hospital and emergency, 150 McTavish Avenue East). Hazards: very cold winters (-20 to -35 C with wind chill, blizzards and icy highways), summer tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and hail, spring flooding on the Assiniboine River, wildfire smoke in some summers. Emergency 911
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use caution late at night in parts of downtown and the north and east ends around Rosser Avenue and 10th Street, where property crime, drug use and street disorder are more common; visitors are advised to keep valuables out of vehicles. Most visitor areas including Riverbank Discovery Centre and the shopping districts are generally fine
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
