Dothan proudly claims the title of peanut town of southeast Alabama. It is the hub of a farming region called the Wiregrass, with about 70,000 people in the city and a larger area around it that comes in to shop, see doctors and eat out. Every November the National Peanut Festival fills the fairgrounds, and painted peanut murals turn up around town.
A visitor can spend an easy day at Landmark Park, an open-air farm museum, or the botanical gardens and the art museum, then stroll downtown. Living here is affordable, with steady jobs in healthcare and retail. Summers are hot and humid, spring brings tornado risk, and Gulf storms can send hurricane remnants inland. Violent crime runs above the national average and property crime is the bigger everyday worry, so lock the car and keep valuables out of sight.

5.0
Fair · Data-based
About 600 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Violent crime rate is above the US average (roughly 600-800 per 100k in recent FBI-based summaries; approximate and not verified in this pass) and property crime is the main risk, so lock cars and do not leave valuables visible. Hospitals: Southeast Health Medical Center (regional referral and trauma center) and Flowers Hospital. Hazards: tornado and severe thunderstorm risk (spring peak), hurricane and tropical storm remnants (roughly June to November, with impacts from Gulf storms), flash flooding, and hot humid summers with high heat index
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Some parts of central and south Dothan, and a few older apartment corridors, have higher property and violent crime rates; use ordinary big-city caution at night there. Westgate, Northside and downtown event areas are generally comfortable for visitors
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
