Overview

As Mississippi's capital and largest city, Jackson carries a lot of the state's history, and about 141,000 people live here. It calls itself the City with Soul, and for good reason. The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and Museum of Mississippi History are among the most moving stops in the South, and the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home and the Eudora Welty House add to that. Fondren is the arts and dining district, and Belhaven has historic homes and tree-lined streets.

Living here is very affordable, with some of the lowest home prices in this group, though the market is soft. But the challenges are serious and you should know them. Jackson has one of the highest homicide rates of any large US city, concentrated outside the tourist and northern areas, and the city has a history of water system failures and boil-water notices, so check current advisories. Summers are hot and humid, and severe storms and floods happen. Many people prefer the suburbs of Ridgeland, Madison or Flowood. As a visitor, stay in Fondren, Belhaven and downtown and use common sense at night.

About 546 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.

              Safety overview

Violent crime about 546 per 100,000 in the FBI-based 2024 data (NeighborhoodScout, 772 violent crimes for 141,449 residents; this may reflect incomplete reporting); homicide rate is far higher at about 53 per 100,000 in 2025 (75 killings, down 32% from 2024), the highest among major US cities analyzed. Common visitor risks: vehicle break-ins, robbery, late-night shootings, boil-water or low-pressure advisories. Hospitals: University of Mississippi Medical Center (only Level I trauma center in state), Baptist Medical Center, St. Dominic Hospital, Merit Health Central. Hazards: severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, extreme summer heat and humidity, flash flooding and Pearl River flooding, occasional winter ice storms

              Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

Jackson has among the highest homicide rates of large US cities; risk is concentrated in parts of west and south Jackson and some residential blocks away from tourist areas. Stick to Fondren, Belhaven, Downtown museum areas, Northeast Jackson and suburbs such as Ridgeland, Madison and Flowood, and avoid walking alone at night in downtown outskirts. The city also has a history of water system failures and boil-water notices, so check current advisories
