Halfway between Tampa and Orlando, Lakeland is a Central Florida city of about 126,000, known as the City of Lakes and Swans. It is a good place for architecture fans, since Florida Southern College has the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings anywhere. The Lake Mirror Promenade and Munn Park anchor a pleasant downtown, and swans glide on Lake Morton.
The city has a steady, small-town feel with plenty happening. Nature lovers head to the Circle B Bar Reserve for wildlife, and Dixieland is the walkable historic neighborhood for coffee and dinner. Crime is above the Florida average for a city this size, mostly property crime, and parts of the northwest side need care at night. Hurricane season runs June to November, storms bring lightning, sinkholes happen in Polk County, and alligators live around the lakes, so keep your distance.
