Built around water, Cape Coral runs on about 400 miles of canals, and boating is the point of the place. About 236,000 people live here on Florida's southwest coast, with Fort Myers about 10 miles away and Naples about 45.
Visitors go to Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve, the Yacht Club beach and Sun Splash waterpark, and watch the burrowing owls that nest from February to July. Sanibel and Captiva, Matlacha and Pine Island make easy day trips. Costs are a little above the national norm, and the market has softened since 2023 as inventory grows and flood and insurance costs weigh on buyers. Hurricane Ian caused major storm surge flooding in 2022, and recovery still shapes demand. Expect red tide and algae some seasons, mosquitoes, alligators near freshwater ponds and hot summers. Crime is generally thought to be low for Florida.
