Rocket launches from Cape Canaveral, roughly 40 miles north, are a regular backyard event in Melbourne, on Florida's Space Coast about 65 miles southeast of Orlando, with a beach barrier island on one side and the Indian River Lagoon on the other. About 87,000 people live in the city, and the place has a technical, engineering feel thanks to the space industry and Florida Tech.
Things to do include the shops and restaurants in downtown Melbourne, the arts scene in Eau Gallie, kayaking or dolphin tours in the lagoon, and beach days at Melbourne Beach and Sebastian Inlet. Brevard Zoo is a good family stop. Costs are around the national average, though home insurance has climbed and the housing market has softened after the pandemic rush. Hurricanes are the big risk from June to November, low-lying lots can flood, and rip currents are common. Crime is moderate and mostly property theft.
