The Ringling show once wintered in Sarasota, and the city still calls itself Circus City, though today it is a Gulf Coast city known for its beaches and its arts scene. About 58,000 people live in the city and nearly a million in the wider metro. Days revolve around the water. Siesta Key and Lido Key are the beach names, and St. Armands Circle and downtown cover shopping and dinner.
The Ringling Museum and Ca' d'Zan is the cultural anchor, Selby Botanical Gardens and Mote Marine Laboratory suit a slower day, and there is a Saturday farmers market all year. It is not cheap, and homes have been pricey and slow to sell. Hurricanes are the big tradeoff. Ian in 2022 and Helene and Milton in 2024 all affected the region. Red tide, rip currents and heavy summer humidity are also part of life here. Parts of Newtown and the North Tamiami Trail are best avoided at night.
