Drive from Nashville, about two hours, or from Huntsville, about 70 miles to the east, to reach Florence, one of the Shoals cities on the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama, where music is what puts it on the map. W.C. Handy, the Father of the Blues, was born here, and the studios of nearby Muscle Shoals recorded some of the best-known soul and rock of the 1960s and 70s. You can tour FAME Studios, visit Handy's home, and see the Rosenbaum House, a rare Frank Lloyd Wright design in Alabama.
The city has about 41,000 people, and the metro about four times that, with the University of North Alabama giving downtown a bit of energy. Living is affordable and steady, with modest housing costs and growth from healthcare and the college. Spring tornado season is the main worry, along with hot, humid summers and flash floods. Property crime is the usual issue, so lock your car.
