About 85 miles south of Atlanta, in the middle of Georgia, Macon has a music pedigree that far outsizes its 157,000 people. The Allman Brothers Band lived and wrote here, Little Richard and Otis Redding came from here, and you can tour the Big House museum. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park preserves thousands of years of Native American history right at the edge of downtown, and in late March thousands of cherry trees bloom for the International Cherry Blossom Festival.
Day to day it is an affordable Southern city where downtown and the Mercer University area have been slowly reviving, with live music and dining on Cherry Street and stately old homes in Vineville. Housing costs are well below the national average. The tradeoffs are crime that runs above average, especially in parts of east and south Macon, so keep valuables out of parked cars. Summers are hot and humid, spring pollen is heavy, and tornado season is real.
