Concord keeps growing fast, with about 115,000 people just north of Charlotte, and it is best known as NASCAR country. Charlotte Motor Speedway is here and hosts big races in May and October, and on those weekends the roads nearby clog badly. The Speedway also runs a well-loved Christmas lights display.
Beyond racing, Concord Mills is a huge shopping draw, Great Wolf Lodge draws families, and Historic Downtown Concord is a pleasant walkable stretch of shops and restaurants. Afton Village and other planned communities appeal to newcomers, and Reed Gold Mine is a short drive for a bit of history. Charlotte is about 20 miles away, so many people live here and work there. Costs sit near the national average, which is a good deal for a metro this size, though home prices have risen sharply and are only now cooling. Crime is around average, with car break-ins and shoplifting near retail areas. Summer is hot and humid, with spring tornado risk and the occasional winter ice storm.
