Two free state museums, natural sciences and history, are a real bargain in Raleigh, North Carolina's capital and a tidy, tree-covered city that has grown quickly. It anchors the Research Triangle with Durham and Chapel Hill, so there are a lot of universities and tech jobs around. For visitors, the art museum is excellent, and the Morgan Street Food Hall and Glenwood South cover eating and nightlife. Umstead State Park is a big patch of forest right at the edge of town.
About 500,000 people live in the city, and the metro area is around one and a half million. Living costs are near the national average, though home prices have risen a lot since 2020 and are now leveling off. Violent crime is fairly low, with car break-ins the main nuisance. Summers are hot and humid, spring pollen is heavy, and hurricane remnants can bring flooding in late summer and fall.
