Shipbuilding made Newport News, and the shipyard along the James River is still the biggest thing in town. About 183,000 people live here on the Virginia Peninsula, many of them tied to the yard, nearby Fort Eustis or the Navy. It is a working city more than a polished one, and that is part of its appeal.
Visitors should start with the Mariners' Museum and Park, which is excellent, then add the Virginia Living Museum, Newport News Park and its lake, and the waterfront at Huntington Park. Williamsburg and Yorktown are a short drive, so the city works well as a cheaper base for Historic Triangle trips. Port Warwick, City Center and Riverside are the comfortable areas to live in. Costs are below the national average, which is the main draw. The tradeoffs are real: crime runs above average in some central and East End blocks, I-64 traffic through the tunnel corridor is punishing, and flooding and hurricane surge are genuine concerns.
