Cyclists have made a home in Rock Hill, along the Catawba River about 25 miles south of Charlotte and the biggest city in York County, South Carolina. It began as a textile and railroad town, and Old Town's historic downtown, Winthrop University and a growing wave of new subdivisions now define it. Day to day it feels like a Charlotte suburb with its own identity.
The Rock Hill Velodrome hosts a real Olympic style track, and the Riverwalk Carolina and Anne Springs Close Greenway give runners and paddlers plenty of room. Glencairn Garden is a pleasant stop, Carowinds is about 12 miles away, and the Come See Me Festival fills April. Housing costs are moderate but rising as Charlotte's growth spills south. The tradeoffs are crime a bit above the national average (mostly car break-ins), hot humid summers, and occasional storms and ice. Old Town, Winthrop and the Riverwalk are the comfortable areas.

6.1
Good · Data-based
About 475 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Violent crime is above the national average but comparable to similar-size Carolina cities (roughly 400-550 per 100k, approximate and not verified in this pass); car break-ins and theft are the main visitor risks. Hospitals: Piedmont Medical Center (Rock Hill) and Novant/Atrium facilities in Fort Mill and Charlotte. Hazards: severe thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes, summer heat and humidity, ice storms in winter; hurricanes weakened by distance from coast but can bring heavy rain and flooding
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Some blocks in the central and west Rock Hill areas away from Old Town (parts of Cherry Road and older apartment corridors) have higher property crime; use ordinary caution after dark. Old Town, Winthrop and Riverwalk are generally comfortable for visitors
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
