Locals call Minot the Magic City. A railroad city that grew up along the Souris River, it is now the biggest town in north central North Dakota and leans on the nearby Air Force base, a small university, and the state fair each July. It is flat, spread out, and practical, with a good zoo, a Scandinavian heritage park, and an air museum, plus a large Norwegian festival in the fall.
What draws people is how affordable it is. Rent and home prices sit below the national average, and a town of about 47,000 gives you the basics without big-city hassle. The tradeoffs are the weather and the river. Winters are long and brutally cold, and the 2011 flood damaged thousands of homes, though levees have been built since. Crime is moderate, mostly theft. For a getaway, Lake Metigoshe is about an hour away.
