Overview

Paterson owes its start to Alexander Hamilton, who planned it in 1791 as America's first industrial city, powered by the Great Falls of the Passaic River, and it later became the Silk City. That history is easy to see: the 77-foot falls are now a national park, and the old mill district and Rogers Locomotive buildings still stand. Hinchliffe Stadium, a Negro Leagues landmark, has also been restored.

It is a dense, hard-working city of about 162,000 packed into a small area, close to Manhattan (about 20 miles). Main Street is known as Little Istanbul for its Turkish restaurants and bakeries, and Dominican, Bangladeshi, Arab and Puerto Rican communities give the food and festivals real range. Garret Mountain offers green space above town. It is cheaper than much of the New York area, though prices are rising as buyers spill over from the city. The tradeoffs: violent crime is above the national average, especially on parts of the Eastside and downtown after dark, and the Passaic River has flooded badly several times, including Hurricane Ida in 2021.

About 600 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.

                    Safety overview

Violent crime rate roughly 500-700 per 100k, above the national average (approximate, not verified this pass); vehicle theft and property crime are the main visitor risks. Hospitals: St. Joseph's University Medical Center (Level 2 trauma), Saint Joseph's Health, and Barnert Hospital. Hazards: Passaic River flooding during heavy rains (notable floods in 1903, 1984, 2011 Irene, 2021 Ida), winter snow and ice, summer humidity; air-quality alerts on hot days

                    Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

Parts of the city with higher violent and property crime include some blocks in the Eastside and around Downtown and Sandy Hill area, especially late at night; use ordinary big-city caution there. Great Falls Historic District, Garret Mountain, and daytime Main Street (Little Istanbul) are generally comfortable for visitors, but stay aware of your surroundings when walking after dark
