Low German is part of everyday life in Steinbach, Manitoba's third largest city, with about 18,000 people on flat prairie roughly 65 kilometers southeast of Winnipeg. It was founded by Mennonite settlers in 1874, and that heritage is still visible. The Mennonite Heritage Village, a living history museum, is the top thing to see, especially during Pioneer Days in July.
It has a reputation as a car dealership town and a place of enterprising local businesses, and the shopping and services here draw people from the whole southeast corner of the province. Housing costs are moderate but rising as the population grows fast, and supply is tight. Crime is below the national average, and mostly means property theft. Winters are properly cold, and spring flooding and mosquitoes come with the territory.

No areas are widely flagged for visitors; take normal precautions late at night and lock vehicles because property crime such as theft from vehicles is the main issue
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
