Overview

Most people know Washington from the postcard: the Mall, the monuments, the Capitol. What surprises visitors is how much of it is free, since the Smithsonian museums cost nothing to enter and you could spend a week just on those. Cherry blossom season in late March and April is the famous moment, though the Wharf, Georgetown and the C&O Canal make good slower days.

About 690,000 people live in the District itself, inside a metro area of more than six million. Living here is expensive, among the priciest places in the country, and the housing market has cooled only a little. Neighborhoods vary a lot, from the rowhouses of Capitol Hill to the nightlife of Adams Morgan and U Street. Violent crime has dropped sharply lately, but phone snatching is common, and areas east of the Anacostia River still see more serious crime. Summers are hot and sticky, so plan for spring or fall.

              3.3

              Poor · Data-based

About 850 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.

              Safety overview

Violent crime fell about 29% in 2025 (127 homicides in 2025 versus 274 in 2023); overall violent crime rate roughly 800-900 per 100,000 (approximate). Common visitor risks: phone snatching, car break-ins, pickpocketing on Metro, robbery late at night. Hospitals: George Washington University Hospital, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Howard University Hospital. Hazards: hot humid summers with heat index over 100F, thunderstorms, occasional winter snow and ice, spring pollen

              Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

Areas east of the Anacostia River (parts of Wards 7 and 8) and some blocks near Trinidad, Congress Heights and Deanwood have higher violent crime rates; use rideshare at night there. Downtown and Metro stations late at night warrant normal caution, especially for phone snatching. Federal deployments and protests may close streets around the National Mall and Capitol; check news
