Steep, twisting streets lined with Victorian buildings make Eureka Springs one of the more unusual small towns in the Ozarks. It grew up around natural springs in the 1880s, and it looks nothing like the rest of Arkansas. About 2,200 people live here. Visitors walk the historic downtown, take a ghost tour at the Crescent Hotel, see the Christ of the Ozarks statue, visit Thorncrown Chapel and ride the old railway. Beaver Lake and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge are close, and the town has a strong artsy, LGBTQ-welcoming reputation with plenty of festivals.
Living here costs less than most of the country, though tourism keeps housing tight. The hills are steep, which is hard on drivers of big vehicles and on anyone with mobility issues. Spring brings severe storms, winters can bring ice, and summers are hot and humid. Bentonville is about 40 miles away for bigger services.
