Breweries, distilleries and wineries are part of the mix in Frederick, where life revolves around the downtown historic district, known for its church spires and packed with old brick storefronts, restaurants and shops, with Carroll Creek Linear Park running right through it. About 92,000 people live here, roughly 50 miles from both Washington and Baltimore, and the city has grown fast as commuters have moved in.
On a free weekend you can browse Main Street, tour Civil War sites like Monocacy National Battlefield and the medical museum, then stop for a local pour. Hikers have Catoctin Mountain Park, Cunningham Falls and Gambrill State Park close by. The tradeoff is cost. Housing is expensive, and the market is tight because of Washington-area demand. Crime is moderate and mostly car break-ins and theft, and summers are hot and humid. Ticks on the trails are worth a check.
