Sitting at the base of the hills between Oakland and Fremont, Hayward is a big, mixed East Bay city of about 157,000 people. It is not a tourist destination, but it has real assets. The shoreline preserve and interpretive center are good for birding and quiet walks, the Hayward Hills have hiking at Garin and Kelly Hill, and downtown has a farmers market and summer street parties. The Japanese Gardens are a pleasant surprise.
Living here is one of the more attainable ways into the Bay Area, but that is a relative term. Housing is still very expensive by national standards, though a bit softer than in Silicon Valley or San Francisco. The city is diverse, with strong Latino, Filipino, Asian and Afghan communities and a wide mix of languages. The Hayward Fault runs directly through town, so earthquake risk is not abstract. Car theft, catalytic converter theft and break-ins are common, and some corridors like Tennyson Road need extra care at night.

Population (157,113, July 1 2025), land area (45.82 sq mi), median owner value and median gross rent are from Census QuickFacts, fetched this pass. Metro figure uses the requested San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley MSA value (4,640,000), shared with San Francisco and Oakland. Hayward has no dedicated tourism bureau found, so the city Discover page is used as visitor site and the city events calendar as the calendar. Elevation, coordinates, founding, event names and months, hotel ranges, tipping, cost-of-living index, crime rates, airport distances, home sale price and 1BR rent are approximate or from general knowledge and not verified in this pass; lower confidence. 6.3
Good · Data-based
About 450 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Violent crime rate roughly 400-500 per 100k and property crime roughly 2,500-3,000 per 100k (approximate, FBI and local reports; not verified this pass); vehicle theft, catalytic converter theft and car break-ins are the main visitor risk, so lock cars and leave nothing visible. Hospitals: St. Rose Hospital (Hayward), Kaiser Permanente Hayward and Kaiser Permanente Fremont nearby, Eden Medical Center (Castro Valley). Hazards: the Hayward Fault runs directly through the city (a major earthquake risk), wildfire smoke episodes in late summer and fall, and hillside fire risk in the Hayward Hills
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Use ordinary big-city caution late at night in parts of the Tennyson Road corridor, some stretches of Mission Boulevard and the areas around Jackson Street and I-880 industrial blocks where property crime, catalytic converter theft and street disorder are more common. Downtown, the hills and Fairway Park are generally comfortable in daytime
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
