The historic Rivertown and waterfront in Antioch date back to the 1850s, on the San Joaquin River at the edge of the Delta, on the eastern end of the Bay Area. About 119,000 people live here, and San Francisco is about 50 miles away.
Outdoor options are good. There is fishing and boating on the Delta, a marina and pier, Contra Loma Regional Park for swimming and hiking, and Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve nearby. Summers are hot, often above 95 degrees. Housing is more affordable than in the core Bay Area, but still expensive against the rest of the country. Violent crime is above the California average, vehicle theft and break-ins are common, and parts of central and west Antioch have had elevated crime. The city has also dealt with police staffing and misconduct problems in recent years. Earthquakes, grass fires and smoke are added concerns.

Parts of central and west Antioch, including some blocks near Somersville Road, Contra Loma Boulevard and older apartment corridors, have had elevated crime; use ordinary caution at night. Rivertown and the marina are generally fine in daytime, but late evenings can be quiet; the city has had police staffing and misconduct issues in recent years
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
