Early November is the best time to visit Yuba City, when the Nagar Kirtan parade draws huge crowds. It is a farm town in California's Sacramento Valley, across the Feather River from Marysville and about 45 miles north of Sacramento. Peaches and prunes made its name, and today it is also home to one of the largest Punjabi Sikh communities in the country. The Sikh temple and Punjabi restaurants are worth seeking out.
Just outside town, the Sutter Buttes rise straight out of flat farmland and are called the world's smallest mountain range. Hikes there are guided only. Life in the city is quiet and suburban, with river trails and farm stands. Homes cost less than in the Bay Area but are still pricey, and buyers from there keep the market competitive. Summers are very hot, smoke drifts in during fire season, and the river carries flood risk. Property and car theft are the main crime worries.
