Bridges tell much of the story in Poughkeepsie, where the Walkway Over the Hudson, a former railroad bridge turned park, is the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. Along the Hudson River, about 75 miles north of New York City, it is a small city that is also home to Vassar College. It is a working city more than a postcard town, with real grit alongside its arts and dining. Visitors walk the bridge, tour Locust Grove, catch a show at the Bardavon, and use it as a base for Hyde Park, where the Roosevelt home and Vanderbilt Mansion are about eight miles north.
For anyone thinking of moving, housing is moderate by Hudson Valley standards but rising as city buyers head upstate. Crime in the city proper runs well above the national average, particularly on the Southside and some blocks off Route 9, so choose your neighborhood carefully. Winters are cold and snowy, and the river can flood after heavy rain.

About this data
Population 32,499, land area 5.14 sq mi, median home value $283,700 and rent $1,400 are Census QuickFacts fetched in this pass (population Vintage 2025). Metro figure 697,221 is the sum of 2020 Census counts for Dutchess and Orange Counties (the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown MSA), an approximation rather than a current estimate; Poughkeepsie is a co-anchor city. Visitor site and calendar URLs (Destination Dutchess) were seen in search and the calendar page was fetched, but it showed navigation only, not event listings. Elevation, coordinates, founding, event months, hotel ranges, tipping, cost-of-living index, crime rates and sale price are approximate or from general knowledge and not verified in this pass; lower confidence overall.

3.3
Poor · Data-based
About 850 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Violent crime rate is well above the national average for the city proper (roughly 700-1,000 per 100k, approximate) and property crime is moderate; car break-ins and phone theft are the main visitor risks. Hospitals: Vassar Brothers Medical Center (Nuvance Health), Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital (Westchester Medical Center Health Network). Hazards: cold snowy winters with nor'easters and ice storms (December to March), summer thunderstorms, Hudson River flooding after heavy rain, ticks and Lyme disease on trails and parks, hurricane remnants (August to October)
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Some blocks on the Southside, along parts of Main Street east of Vassar (near Church Street), Academy and Mill Streets, and some neighborhoods off Route 9 see higher violent and drug-related crime, mostly at night; use ordinary city caution after dark and avoid poorly lit side streets. Downtown Main Street near the Bardavon and the waterfront is generally fine during events
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
