Stroll College Avenue and you are in Appleton, the anchor of the Fox Cities in eastern Wisconsin, a paper mill town that now runs on health care, insurance and manufacturing. About 75,000 people live here, and it feels clean, safe and practical, with a good downtown and Lawrence University adding a touch of culture. Harry Houdini spent part of his youth here.
Visitors can see the Houdini exhibit at the History Museum at the Castle, take kids to Building for Kids, catch Timber Rattlers baseball, or walk the Fox River trails. Mile of Music in August packs downtown with live acts, and the Christmas parade is a local tradition. Green Bay and its Bay Beach amusement park are about 30 miles away. Housing is fairly affordable but the market is tight. Crime is low by American standards. The real tradeoff is winter, with heavy snow and stretches below zero from December through February.

Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Nothing of particular note for visitors; Appleton is generally safe. Use ordinary caution late at night in a few central-city blocks along parts of Richmond Street and near some older apartment blocks, and around downtown bars after closing on weekends
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
