Overview

Head to the high desert side of the Cascades and you reach Bend, Central Oregon's outdoor town of about 107,000 people, built around beer, bikes, skiing and the Deschutes River. It calls itself Beer Town USA, and the Bend Ale Trail is easy to follow. Downtown is lively, the Old Mill District sits along the river, and floating the Deschutes on a summer afternoon is a local ritual.

Visitors can ski or ride the chairlift at Mount Bachelor, hike Pilot Butte and Tumalo Falls, explore lava tubes at Lava Lands, or drive to Smith Rock, about 30 miles away. The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway is worth a full day. The catch is cost. Housing is expensive for Oregon and rents are high, though the market has flattened. Crime is modest, but property crime and homeless encampments show up along parts of Highway 97. Summer wildfire smoke, winter ice and strong sun at altitude are worth planning for. Portland is about 160 miles away.
