Explore Chandler, the Silicon Desert, and you find a tidy, planned suburb of about 279,000 in the southeast Phoenix valley, about 25 miles from downtown Phoenix. Tech and corporate employers drive the local economy, and many residents come for the work. The historic downtown around Dr. A.J. Chandler Park has restaurants and small shops, and the Chandler Museum tells the local story. Veterans Oasis Park is good for a quiet desert walk, and spring training baseball is close by. The Ostrich Festival in March is the city's signature event.
Safety is a real strength, with violent crime far below the national average. The main visitor risk is car break-ins in parking lots. Housing is expensive compared with much of the country, and rent is not cheap either. Summer heat is the big challenge, often 105 to 118 degrees, so plan outdoor time early. Monsoon dust storms and desert wildlife round out the list.
