A farm town that once shipped hay, Gilbert still has a small historic core in the Heritage District, where restaurants cluster around Water Tower Plaza. Today about 287,000 people live here in the southeast Phoenix valley, and it feels like a very orderly, family-focused suburb. Locals spend time at the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch (good for birds), Gilbert Regional Park and Agritopia's farm-and-restaurant district. Hale Centre Theatre and a Saturday farmers market add some local color, and spring training baseball is close by.
Safety is a strong point, with violent crime far below the national average. Housing is pricey, though the market has been flat lately. The main tradeoff is the heat: summer highs often hit 105 to 115 degrees, monsoon dust storms roll through, and desert trails have rattlesnakes and scorpions.
