Each winter, from late November into January, Glendale Glitters fills historic downtown with lights, and it helps earn the city the label Christmas Capital of Arizona. Glendale is the West Valley's sports and entertainment hub, about 12 miles northwest of Phoenix, and it is also the Antique Capital of Arizona. Historic downtown is a small, walkable stretch of antique shops and cafes. About 260,000 people live here, part of a metro of more than five million.
Westgate and State Farm Stadium handle the big crowds, bowl games included, and Camelback Ranch hosts spring training. Thunderbird Conservation Park and Sahuaro Ranch Park give you desert air and easy walking. Rent and homes are near the national norm, and the market has flattened out lately. Vehicle theft is the notable crime problem, so keep valuables out of sight. Summers are severe, often 105 to 115 F, with monsoon dust storms and flash floods from July through September.
