Old brick buildings, a Fox Theatre and the Taoist Temple on China Alley give the historic downtown around Courthouse Square its character. Hanford is the county seat of Kings County, in the middle of the San Joaquin Valley, about 45 miles south of Fresno. Dairies, cotton and other farms surround it. About 62,000 people live here.
It suits a quiet life. Prices are lower than on coastal California but no bargain, and the market has been competitive as Bay Area buyers move in. Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks are an hour or two east. The tradeoffs are heat, often over 100 degrees in summer, poor valley air with smoke and winter tule fog, valley fever risk when dust is stirred up, and flood risk near the Kings River. Vehicle theft is the main crime concern.

7.0
Very good · Data-based
About 370 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.
Safety overview
Crime is near the California average for a city of its size, with vehicle theft and property crime the main visitor risk (specific rates not verified in this pass). Hospitals: Adventist Health Hanford, Kaweah Health (Visalia, larger), Lemoore Naval hospital clinic. Hazards: extreme summer heat (100F+ common; Redfin shows severe heat risk for essentially all properties), San Joaquin Valley air quality (ozone, PM2.5, wildfire smoke, winter tule fog), valley fever (Coccidioides fungus; risk when dust is disturbed), flood risk from Kings River and Tulare Lake basin (about half of properties per Redfin)
Local notes
Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.
Some parts of south and west Hanford and areas near older commercial corridors and Highway 198 have more property and vehicle crime; use ordinary caution at night. Historic downtown and newer residential areas are generally comfortable in daytime
Times marked “est.” are estimates: drives use typical road distances at highway speeds, and train or bus times assume both cities have service. Always check a route planner and timetables before you travel.
