Overview

Some 27 miles from Cedar Rapids, Iowa City is a college town in the best sense, home to the University of Iowa and a UNESCO City of Literature thanks to the famed Writers' Workshop. About 76,000 people live here, and the energy centers on the Ped Mall downtown, with bookstores like Prairie Lights, bars, shops and a lot of students. On football Saturdays Kinnick Stadium takes over the town.

Visitors can tour the Old Capitol on the Pentacrest, see the Stanley Museum of Art, catch a show at Hancher, or walk Hickory Hill Park. Lake Macbride and Coralville Lake are close. Living is comfortable and fairly affordable, though tight housing has pushed prices above the Iowa average. The city is safe by most measures, with bike and phone theft the usual complaints and some rowdiness downtown late on weekends. Expect cold winters, spring storms and a memory of the 2008 flood.

                Very good · Data-based

About 250 violent crimes per 100,000 people a year; the US average is about 370.

                Safety overview

Crime is low to moderate for a college city; property crime and bike and phone theft are the main visitor risks, and alcohol-related incidents downtown late at night (crime rates not retrieved in this pass). Hospitals: University of Iowa Health Care (major academic medical center and Level 1 trauma) and Mercy Iowa City. Hazards: severe thunderstorms and tornadoes (spring and summer), Iowa River flooding history (2008), cold winters with snow and ice

                Local notes

Specific places where extra care is worthwhile, especially at night. Most visits are trouble-free.

None of particular note; downtown late at night on football and bar-heavy weekends can be crowded and rowdy, with some fights and theft near bars. Some parts of the southeast side have higher property crime; use ordinary city caution at night
