Some 27 miles from Cedar Rapids, Iowa City is a college town in the best sense, home to the University of Iowa and a UNESCO City of Literature thanks to the famed Writers' Workshop. About 76,000 people live here, and the energy centers on the Ped Mall downtown, with bookstores like Prairie Lights, bars, shops and a lot of students. On football Saturdays Kinnick Stadium takes over the town.
Visitors can tour the Old Capitol on the Pentacrest, see the Stanley Museum of Art, catch a show at Hancher, or walk Hickory Hill Park. Lake Macbride and Coralville Lake are close. Living is comfortable and fairly affordable, though tight housing has pushed prices above the Iowa average. The city is safe by most measures, with bike and phone theft the usual complaints and some rowdiness downtown late on weekends. Expect cold winters, spring storms and a memory of the 2008 flood.
