Lodging here costs far less than rooms in Yosemite, which is why many visitors base themselves in this Central Valley farm city of about 100,000 and drive about 80 miles up Highway 140 for the day. The city itself is modest, with a historic downtown, murals, the courthouse museum and a small zoo in Applegate Park.
UC Merced brings a young crowd and some energy, and the community is notably diverse, with Hmong, Punjabi and Latino neighborhoods and the food and festivals to match. Housing is more affordable than most of California, though it has risen in recent years, and the market is steady. The downsides are worth knowing. Summers regularly go past 100 degrees, the air quality can be poor from smoke and valley haze, and winter tule fog makes driving risky. Crime is above the California average, particularly property and vehicle theft in south and west Merced, so do not leave things visible in your car. Fresno and Modesto are each within an hour.
