One of the main Caribbean American communities in South Florida, Miramar is a residential suburb in southern Broward County, about 20 miles from Miami and 15 from Fort Lauderdale, with roughly 143,000 people. You hear Spanish, Haitian Creole and Jamaican Patois alongside English. It grew quickly from the 1990s onward on former Everglades edge land, so most of it is planned neighborhoods, lakes, gated communities and shopping strips.
Visitors do not come for sights. Miramar Regional Park and its amphitheater host concerts and fireworks, the Cultural Center has a steady arts calendar, and Sawgrass Mills mall is next door in Sunrise. Beaches at Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale are a short drive, and airboat rides in the Everglades are nearby. The tradeoffs are the usual South Florida ones. Housing has gotten expensive, insurance and HOA fees add up, and hurricane season, summer street flooding, and heavy heat are all part of the deal. Crime is moderate, mostly vehicle and package theft, and traffic on Pembroke Road and University Drive is rough.
